The Ultimate Postpartum Recovery Checklist: What You Actually Need for the Fourth Trimester

Posted in June 2025
When we prepare for a baby, we spend months picking out the perfect crib, nesting in the nursery, and folding tiny outfits. But as a doula, I am going to let you in on a little secret: the person who needs the most preparation and care after birth is YOU.
The postpartum period, often called the Fourth Trimester, is a time of massive physical, emotional, and hormonal changes. Your body has just run a marathon, and it needs intentional, tender care to heal.
Whether you are planning a natural vaginal birth or a belly birth, your body goes through a major recovery process. To make sure you aren't sending your partner to the drugstore at 2:00 AM, here is the honest, doula approved checklist of what you actually need to heal comfortably at home.
1. Perineal Care and Soothing Comfort
If you have a vaginal delivery, your perineum (the area between your vagina and anus) will be very sore, bruised, or potentially torn. Keeping this area clean and calm is your number one priority during the first two weeks.
The Ergonomic Peri Bottle: The hospital will give you a standard squirt bottle, but it requires you to awkwardly stick your hand into the toilet bowl to get the right angle. Instead, pack an Upside Down Perineal Peri Bottle. It has an angled neck that sprays upward, letting you cleanse yourself with warm water completely friction free.
Organic Herbal Sitz Baths: Sitting in a warm shallow bath infused with healing herbs does wonders for swelling and tears. I highly recommend using an Organic Herbal Sitz Bath Blend made with natural ingredients like calendula, witch hazel, and yarrow. It speeds up healing and provides instant relief.
Targeted Reusable Gel Ice Packs: Standard ice pads from the hospital are bulky and warm up quickly. Investing in a set of Reusable Postpartum Gel Ice Packs that are slim and contoured to fit perfectly inside your underwear will be a lifesaver for those first few days of intense swelling.
2. Postpartum Wear and Leak Protection
You will bleed for about 4 to 6 weeks after giving birth (this is called lochia, and it is completely normal!). You need heavy duty, soft protection that won't irritate your skin or press against sensitive areas.
High Waisted Support Underwear: Skip your regular panties for a while. You want High Waisted Mesh or Disposable Postpartum Underwear that stretches easily over maximum sized pads and sits safely above a C-section incision line if you have one.
Organic Nursing Pads: Whether you plan to breastfeed or not, your milk will come in a few days after birth, leading to unexpected leaks. Choose Reusable Organic Bamboo Nursing Pads because they are incredibly soft against highly sensitive nipples and won't stick to your skin like disposable plastic ones.
3. Nourishment and Hydration Support
Healing requires a lot of energy. Your body needs deep hydration and specific nutrients to rebuild tissue and produce breast milk if that is your goal.
Nourishing Lactation Tea: Staying warm and hydrated supports your milk supply and digestion. A gentle, comforting Organic Lactation Support Tea can help boost your milk production while giving you a quiet, warm moment to yourself during the day.
A Giant Insulated Straw Tumbler: When you are trapped under a sleeping or nursing baby, you cannot easily get up to refill a small glass. Keep a 40oz Insulated Straw Tumbler right next to your nursing chair to ensure you are drinking enough water without needing constant refills.
The Ultimate Recovery Rule: Rest
No product can replace the healing power of staying in bed. In the doula world, we like to say: 5 days in the bed, 5 days on the bed, and 5 days near the bed. Let your village feed you, let your partner change the diapers, and focus entirely on resting and bonding with your new baby.
